Anonymity
Most owners of precious gemstones keep their identity private. Transactions generally occur in secret negotiations between agents of buyers and sellers or through public auctions under the same confidentiality procedures.
Indeterminate Holdings
Most gem collections are built one piece at a time over many years and items from collections that come up for sale are sometimes sold individually, rather than as a set. Therefore, it is impossible to know how many pieces an individual collector might own at any time.
Changing Values
Prices of gemstones are generally estimated by the amount paid for a similar piece in a public sale, usually an auction by one of the premier auction houses. Pre-sale estimates of value are notoriously inaccurate with auctioneers deliberately setting low prices to draw bidders.

Quality Versus Quantity
The number of objects in a collection is not an accurate indication of worth due to the wide variation in the value of a single object. For example, one collector may have five gemstones, each worth millions of dollars, while another has a thousand lesser pieces each with lower market value.
